Royal Standard of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada

Royal Standard of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada

Description

  • The Emirate of Granada (1230–1492) was the last Muslim state in the Iberian Peninsula, ruled by the Nasrid dynasty from their mountain capital at the Alhambra
  • Construction: a red pennant bearing the Nasrid motto in gold Arabic calligraphy — "وَلَا غَالِبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ" ("There is no victor but God")
  • The same motto is inscribed throughout the Alhambra, where it became the dynastic slogan

Trivia

  • Founded by Muhammad I ibn Nasr after the Almohad collapse; the emirate survived as a Castilian tributary for 260 years
  • Surrendered by Muhammad XII (Boabdil) to Ferdinand and Isabella on 2 January 1492 — the end of Al-Andalus
  • The motto appears over 7,000 times across the Alhambra's walls and ceilings
