Description
- The South African Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, 1852–1902) was a Voortrekker Boer state in the Transvaal region, defeated and annexed by Britain in the Second Boer War
- Construction: the Vierkleur (four-colour) — a green vertical band at the hoist, and three horizontal bands of red-white-blue (Dutch national colours) at the fly
- The green band was added to distinguish the Boer flag from the Netherlands tricolour
Trivia
- Discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand (1886) transformed the Republic's economy and fuelled the war with Britain
- Presidents included Paul Kruger, whose face survives on the Krugerrand gold coin
- The Vierkleur was briefly revived on the pre-1994 South African flag
