Flag of Ireland

The Irish tricolour was first publicly unveiled on 7 March 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher in Waterford. It only became the national flag after the 1916 Easter Rising, when it was raised above Dublin's General Post Office. The Constitution of Ireland formally confirmed it in 1937.

Green represents the Gaelic tradition and Catholic heritage, orange symbolizes the Protestant community and followers of William of Orange, and white represents lasting peace between them. Meagher expressed his hope that beneath the flag "the hands of Irish Protestants and Irish Catholics may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood."
