Israel's flag was officially adopted on 28 October 1948, shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel. The blue stripes represent the tallit (prayer shawl) worn during Jewish prayer, while the Star of David is one of Judaism's most recognizable symbols.
At the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897, David Wolffsohn presented the flag, declaring "it is blue and white. The talith with which we wrap ourselves when we pray: that is our symbol." The design synthesizes ancient Jewish religious tradition with modern national identity. White represents purity and the Divine, while blue symbolizes God's glory.
