Flag of Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan's flag was adopted on 4 June 1992, shortly after independence from the Soviet Union. Designed by artist Shaken Niyazbekov and chosen from more than a thousand competition entries, it shows a sky-blue field with golden imagery: a 32-rayed sun above a soaring steppe eagle, and a vertical stripe of Kazakh ornamental pattern along the hoist.
The sky-blue field stands for peace, tranquillity, and the endless sky that unites the Kazakh people, echoing ancient Turkic reverence for Tengri, the sky god. The sun represents life and energy, its 32 rays symbolising abundance, while the steppe eagle evokes freedom, state power, and the soaring aspirations of the nation. The hoist ornament celebrates Kazakh art and the country's cultural traditions.
