Kiribati's flag was adopted on 12 July 1979, the day the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. The design is based on the colonial coat of arms granted in 1937 and retains its distinctive heraldic look, unlike the simpler ensign-style flags of neighbouring Pacific nations.
The upper half is red and shows a rising golden sun with seventeen rays and a golden frigatebird soaring above it. The lower half has three alternating wavy white and blue stripes representing the Pacific Ocean. The seventeen rays stand for the sixteen Gilbert Islands plus Banaba, and the three pairs of wave-stripes symbolise the country's three island groups — the Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line Islands. The frigatebird embodies power, freedom, and the seafaring traditions of the I-Kiribati people.
