Flag of Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan's flag was adopted on 3 March 1992 after independence from the Soviet Union. The design features a red field with a yellow sun of forty rays at the centre, overlaid with a stylised red tündük — the wooden crown of a traditional yurt through which smoke escapes and sunlight enters.
Red represents bravery and valour, a deliberate nod to the banner of the legendary hero Manas the Noble. The forty rays of the sun stand for the forty Kyrgyz tribes he is said to have united, and the tündük symbolises origin, home, and unity of the people under one sky. In 2023 parliament revised the flag so the sun's rays are straight rather than wavy, addressing criticism that the earlier emblem resembled a sunflower.
