Flag of Laos

Laos adopted its present flag on 2 December 1975, the day the Pathet Lao abolished the monarchy and established the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The design features three horizontal bands of red, blue, and red, with the blue centre band twice the height of the red bands and a white disc centred on the blue.

The red bands represent the blood shed by the Lao people in the struggle for independence, the blue symbolises the Mekong River and national prosperity, and the white disc evokes the full moon over the Mekong and the unity of the people under the revolutionary government. Originally designed in 1945 by Maha Sila Viravong for the Lao Issara movement, it is one of the few flags of a communist state without a star or hammer and sickle.
