Flag of Liberia

Liberia's flag features eleven alternating red and white horizontal stripes with a blue canton bearing a single white five-pointed star. Adopted on 26 July 1847 upon independence, the design was modelled on the flag of the United States, reflecting Liberia's founding by freed African Americans settled by the American Colonization Society. The eleven stripes honour the eleven signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence.

The white lone star represents freedom granted to former slaves and gives Liberia its nickname, the Lone Star Republic. Red stands for courage, white for moral purity, and blue for the African mainland. The flag was designed by a committee of seven women led by Susannah Lewis, and flies today over one of the world's largest merchant fleets as a flag of convenience.
