Construction sheet

Description

  • Three horizontal stripes of red (top), black (middle, double-width), and green (bottom), with a white crescent and five-pointed star centred on the black stripe

  • Under Gaddafi, from 1977 to 2011, Libya used a plain green flag — the only national flag in the world with a single colour and no design
  • The three stripes represent the three historic regions of Libya: Tripolitania (green), Fezzan (red), and Cyrenaica (black)
  • Construction: three horizontal stripes in ratio 1:2:1
  • The crescent opens to the right (fly side)
  • The five-pointed star sits between the cusps of the crescent
  • Both are centred on the black band
  • Ratio 1:2

Trivia

  • From 1977 to 2011, Libya's flag was the only national flag in the world with just one colour and no design (plain green)
  • Green represents Islam; the current flag returned to the tricolour after the 2011 revolution
  • Libya has had more flag changes (5) in recent decades than most nations

Flag of Libya

Libya's flag features three horizontal stripes of red, black (double-width), and green, with a white crescent and five-pointed star centred on the black stripe. Originally the flag of the Kingdom of Libya (1951--1969), it was readopted in 2011 during the civil war that overthrew the Gaddafi regime.

The three stripes represent Libya's historic regions: Fezzan (red), Cyrenaica (black), and Tripolitania (green). Under Gaddafi, from 1977 to 2011, Libya used a plain green flag -- the only national flag in the world with a single colour and no design. The white crescent and star are symbols of Islam.
