Libya's flag features three horizontal stripes of red, black (double-width), and green, with a white crescent and five-pointed star centred on the black stripe. Originally the flag of the Kingdom of Libya (1951--1969), it was readopted in 2011 during the civil war that overthrew the Gaddafi regime.
The three stripes represent Libya's historic regions: Fezzan (red), Cyrenaica (black), and Tripolitania (green). Under Gaddafi, from 1977 to 2011, Libya used a plain green flag -- the only national flag in the world with a single colour and no design. The white crescent and star are symbols of Islam.
