The flag of Liechtenstein consists of two equal horizontal bands, blue over red, with a gold princely crown in the upper hoist canton. Blue represents the Alpine sky over the tiny principality, red evokes the evening fires lit in homes across the mountains, and the crown symbolises the unity of the people with their princely house.
The basic blue-red bicolour dates to 1921, with antecedents as far back as 1764. The distinctive crown was added on 24 June 1937 for a memorable reason: at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Liechtenstein's delegation discovered that Haiti used an identical blue-over-red flag. To distinguish itself, Liechtenstein added the princely crown to the hoist, and the current three-dimensional depiction was refined in 1982.
