Flag of Lithuania

Lithuania's flag is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, green, and red in three equal bands. Originally adopted in 1918 after the restoration of Lithuanian statehood, it was designed by artists Tadas Daugirdas and Antanas Zmuidzinavicius in 1917. The flag was banned during the Soviet occupation and finally re-adopted on 20 March 1989, shortly before Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to formally declare independence in 1990.

Yellow symbolises the sun, prosperity, and the light of sovereignty; green represents the beauty of nature, freedom, and hope; and red stands for the blood shed by Lithuanians for the homeland and the courage of the people. A complementary historic state flag — a red banner bearing the white Vytis, a mounted knight — is also used alongside the tricolour.
