Flag of Malawi

Malawi's flag comprises three equal horizontal bands of black, red, and green, with a red rising sun of 31 rays centred on the black band. Adopted on 6 July 1964 at independence from the United Kingdom, the flag is based on the emblem of the Malawi Congress Party, which led the independence movement. The Pan-African colours signify the African people, the blood shed in the freedom struggle, and the country's evergreen natural landscape.

The 31-ray rising sun commemorates Malawi as the 31st African nation to achieve independence, and symbolises the dawn of hope and freedom across the continent. A 2010 redesign replaced the rising sun with a full white sun to suggest Malawi had reached its noon of progress, but the original flag was restored in 2012 after public opposition.
