Flag of Malaysia

Malaysia's flag, the Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory), features 14 alternating red and white horizontal stripes with a blue canton bearing a crescent moon and a 14-point Federal Star in gold. The 14 stripes represent the equal status of Malaysia's 13 member states and federal territories.

The flag was created in 1949 by Mohamed Hamzah, a 29-year-old architect. Following the formation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963, the design was modified to add additional stripes and star points reflecting the inclusion of Sabah and Sarawak. The crescent represents Islam, and yellow is the royal colour of the Malay rulers.
