Flag of Maldives
The flag of the Maldives was adopted on 25 July 1965, the day the country gained independence from the British protectorate. It shows a red field with a green rectangle at the centre and a white vertical crescent on the green, its horns opening towards the fly.
Red represents the blood shed by national heroes and their willingness to sacrifice for the country. The green rectangle stands for peace, prosperity, and the date palms that line the islands' shores, while the white crescent is the universal symbol of Islam, the state religion. The design simplifies an earlier protectorate flag that had a black-and-white striped hoist, and the sultanate banners before it were plain red. The current version has remained unchanged since independence.
