Flag of Mali

Mali's flag is a vertical tricolour of green, yellow, and red in equal widths. Adopted on 1 March 1961, it uses the Pan-African colours inspired by Ethiopia's tricolour, signalling solidarity with other African independence movements. Green represents the land and hope, yellow symbolises purity and the country's mineral wealth, and red honours the blood shed in the struggle for independence from France, which was achieved in 1960.

An earlier version adopted in 1959 for the short-lived Mali Federation featured a black human figure called the kanaga at its centre. After the federation dissolved and Mali became a standalone republic, the figure was removed in 1961 following objections from the country's Muslim majority to pictorial depictions of people. The flag has been unchanged since.
