Monaco's flag is a simple bicolour of two equal horizontal bands, red over white. Both colours come from the heraldic arms of the House of Grimaldi, the dynasty that has ruled the tiny Mediterranean principality since 1297. The flag design itself traces to 1339 in earlier forms, making it one of the oldest national flags in continued use, though the current clean bicolour was formally adopted on 4 April 1881 under Prince Charles III, replacing earlier banners that bore the full Grimaldi coat of arms.
The design is almost indistinguishable from the flag of Indonesia, which uses identical colours but different proportions (2:3 rather than Monaco's 4:5). Alongside the civil flag, the House of Grimaldi continues to use a state banner bearing the full coat of arms on the same red and white field.
