Mongolia's flag consists of three equal vertical bands of red, blue, and red, with the golden Soyombo symbol placed on the hoist-side red band. The current version was adopted on 12 February 1992 after the democratic transition, when a fourteen-pointed socialist star sitting atop the Soyombo was removed.
The blue central band represents the "eternal blue sky" (Tenger), a traditional symbol of the Mongolian nation, while the red bands signify progress, prosperity, and the warmth of the hearth fire. The Soyombo is a composite glyph attributed to the 17th-century Buddhist leader Zanabazar, combining fire, sun, moon, earth, water, the yin-yang, and a pair of rectangles traditionally read as fortress walls or as the phrase "friendship is stronger than stone."
