Flag of Mozambique

Mozambique's flag displays three horizontal bands of green, black fimbriated with white, and yellow, with a red isosceles triangle based at the hoist. Adopted on 1 May 1983, it evolved from the banner of the ruling Liberation Front, FRELIMO, which led the struggle for independence from Portuguese rule achieved in 1975. Each colour carries meaning: green for the land, black for the African continent, yellow for mineral wealth, white for peace, and red for anti-colonial resistance.

The red triangle bears a yellow five-pointed star, an open book, a hoe, and a crossed AK-47 rifle with bayonet. Together these represent internationalism, education, peasant agriculture, and national defence. Mozambique is the only country in the world whose national flag features a modern assault rifle, a symbol of continuing pride in the armed struggle for liberation.
