Flag of Namibia

Namibia's flag features a broad red diagonal band edged with white, dividing the flag from lower hoist to upper fly, with blue in the upper hoist triangle and green in the lower fly triangle. A 12-ray golden sun sits in the blue section. Adopted on 21 March 1990 when Namibia gained independence from South African administration, the flag was selected from more than 800 public submissions by the Constituent Assembly.

Blue represents the sky, the Atlantic Ocean, and Namibia's scarce but vital water resources. Red stands for the Namibian people and their shared heritage, white for peace and unity, and green for vegetation and farming. The golden sun recalls the motif of SWAPO, the movement that led the independence struggle, and symbolises life and the nation's energy.
