Flag of Nauru
Nauru's flag was adopted on 31 January 1968, the day the tiny Pacific island republic gained independence from an Australian-led trusteeship. The design, chosen from a public competition, is unusually literal: it plots the country's geography directly onto the cloth.
A blue field represents the Pacific Ocean, and a narrow horizontal yellow stripe across the middle stands for the Equator. In the lower hoist quadrant, a white twelve-pointed star marks Nauru's precise position just south of the Equator in the central Pacific. The twelve points of the star symbolise the twelve original tribes of the island. Nauru is the third-smallest country in the world by area, covering only 21 square kilometres, and its flag is one of the most geographically descriptive of any nation.
