Flag of Nepal

Nepal's flag is the only non-quadrilateral national flag in the world. It consists of two stacked crimson pennons with a blue border, the upper bearing a white stylised crescent moon and the lower a white twelve-rayed sun. The modern design was formalised on 16 December 1962 and preserved when Nepal became a federal republic in 2008.

The shape is a simplification of two separate pennons once flown by the rival Rana and Shah branches of the royal family, later combined into a single emblem. Crimson, the colour of the rhododendron, is Nepal's national colour and represents the bravery of its people; the blue border signifies peace. The 1962 constitution defines the flag's exact geometry with twenty-four precise construction rules, making it one of the most mathematically specified flags.
