Flag of Panama

The flag of Panama is divided into four equal rectangles: a white upper hoist bearing a blue star, a red lower hoist, a blue upper fly, and a white lower fly bearing a red star. It was designed by Manuel Encarnacion Amador, son of Panama's first president Manuel Amador Guerrero, and hoisted provisionally on 4 November 1903 just after independence from Colombia. The design was formally adopted on 4 June 1904.

The red and blue quarters represent the Conservative and Liberal parties that dominated nineteenth-century politics, while the two white quarters symbolise the peace between them. The blue star stands for purity and honesty in public life, the red star for authority and law. 4 November is observed each year as Flag Day.
