Flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
The flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a vertical triband of blue, gold, and green, with the gold band at double width and bearing three green diamonds arranged in the shape of a V at the centre. It was designed by Swiss graphic artist Julien van der Wal and adopted on 21 October 1985, replacing the original flag raised when the country achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1979.
Blue recalls the sky and the Caribbean Sea, gold the warm sunshine and sand of the Grenadines, and green the verdant hills of Saint Vincent and the energy of its people. The three diamonds form a V for Vincent and evoke the country's nickname, the Gems of the Antilles, given to the chain of smaller islands that run southward from the main isle.
