Flag of San Marino

San Marino's flag consists of two equal horizontal bands — white over light blue — with the national coat of arms centred on the flag. White represents the snow on Mount Titano and symbolises purity, while light blue stands for the clear sky above the tiny mountain republic as well as liberty, the guiding principle of the world's oldest extant republic founded in AD 301 by Saint Marinus.

The coat of arms features three silver towers topped by ostrich feathers on the three peaks of Mount Titano — Guaita, Cesta, and Montale — each a real medieval fortification. Above sits a closed crown, while oak and laurel wreaths flank the shield and the scroll at the base bears the motto Libertas ("Liberty"). The current design codifying a form in use since 1862 was adopted on 22 July 2011.
