Senegal's flag is a vertical tricolour of green, yellow, and red, with a green five-pointed star centred on the yellow band. Adopted on 20 August 1960 when Senegal withdrew from the short-lived Mali Federation and became fully independent from France, the design retains the Pan-African colours inspired by Ethiopia but arranges them in the vertical format characteristic of French colonial-era flags.
Green represents Islam, the religion of the overwhelming majority, as well as hope and the memory of the Prophet Muhammad. Yellow symbolises wealth, progress, and the arts drawn from labour. Red recalls the blood shed in the struggle for independence and the determination to fight poverty. The central green star replaced the human figure that had appeared on the flag of the Mali Federation and stands for unity and aspiration.
