Serbia's flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, blue, and white — the pan-Slavic colours — with the lesser national coat of arms set toward the hoist side of the central blue band. The tricolour pattern dates to 1835 under Prince Milos Obrenovic and symbolises the ties among Slavic peoples; red represents blood shed for freedom, blue stands for freedom and loyalty, and white for peace and honesty.
The coat of arms depicts a white double-headed eagle holding a royal crown, with the Serbian Cross — a cross flanked by four stylised Cyrillic letters C, traditionally interpreted as the motto "Samo sloga Srbina spasava" (Only unity saves the Serbs) — on a red shield at the eagle's breast. The modern form of the flag was codified on 11 November 2010; a simpler civil version omits the coat of arms.
