The flag of Seychelles features five oblique bands of blue, yellow, red, white, and green radiating from the lower hoist corner. Adopted on 18 June 1996, it replaced the earlier socialist-era banner that had flown since 1977. The unusual radiating layout, shared with almost no other national flag, was designed to suggest a dynamic young country moving forward into a new era.
Blue represents the sky and the Indian Ocean that surrounds the 115-island archipelago. Yellow stands for the sun that lights and warms the country, red for the unity, love, and determination of the people, white for social justice and harmony, and green for the land and its natural environment. The colours also combine those of the ruling party and the former opposition, signalling post-reconciliation politics.
