Sierra Leone's flag consists of three equal horizontal bands of green, white, and blue. Adopted on 27 April 1961 when Sierra Leone gained independence from the United Kingdom, it was designed by the College of Arms in London to reflect the country's landscape, aspirations, and coastal geography. The flag has remained unchanged through decades of political upheaval and civil war.
Green stands for agriculture, the forested mountains of the interior, and the country's natural resources. White represents unity and justice. Blue specifically refers to the natural harbour of Freetown, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, and the Atlantic Ocean. The stripes are of equal width, giving the flag a simple, balanced composition that has become an enduring symbol of Sierra Leone at home and abroad.
