Flag of Singapore

Singapore's flag was adopted in 1959 when the nation became self-governing. Red symbolizes universal fellowship and equality, while white represents purity and virtue. The crescent moon represents a young nation on the ascendant, and the five stars symbolize democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.

According to Lee Kuan Yew, the design combined symbols desired by Singapore's diverse communities: stars favoured by the Chinese majority and a crescent moon favoured by the Malay-Muslim minority. This inclusive design assured all communities that Singapore represented all its people.
