Slovakia's flag is a horizontal tricolour of white, blue, and red — the pan-Slavic colours — with the national coat of arms placed toward the hoist side. White, blue, and red respectively represent peace, loyalty and truth, and the bloodshed and courage of the Slovak people. Without the coat of arms the flag would be visually identical to those of Russia and Slovenia, making the shield an essential distinguishing feature.
The coat of arms depicts a white double-cross rising from three blue hills on a red shield fimbriated in white. The double-cross has been a Slovak national symbol since at least the 14th century, and the three hills are traditionally identified with Tatra, Fatra, and Matra. The modern tricolour with coat of arms was adopted on 3 September 1992 and enshrined in the constitution ahead of Slovakia's peaceful separation from Czechoslovakia in 1993.
