Slovenia's flag is a horizontal tricolour of white, blue, and red — the pan-Slavic colours — with the national coat of arms placed at the upper hoist, straddling the white and blue bands. The colours represent peace, loyalty and the Adriatic Sea, and the blood shed in the struggle for independence. Without the coat of arms the stripes alone would be identical to those of Russia and Slovakia.
The coat of arms depicts Mount Triglav, the country's highest peak at 2,864 m and enduring national symbol, in white on a blue shield. Two blue wavy lines below represent the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia's rivers, while three six-pointed gold stars above are taken from the crest of the medieval Counts of Celje, the last great Slovene aristocratic dynasty. The flag was adopted on 27 June 1991, two days after independence from Yugoslavia.
