Description

  • A light blue field with a white five-pointed star (the Star of Unity) centred
  • The five points of the star represent the five territories historically inhabited by Somalis: former British Somaliland, former Italian Somaliland, Djibouti, the Ogaden (Ethiopia), and the North Eastern Province (Kenya)
  • Designed by Mohammed Awale Liban, the flag was adopted on 12 October 1954 for the trust territory and retained upon independence on 1 July 1960
  • The blue was originally chosen to honour the United Nations
  • Construction: a uniform blue field with a white five-pointed star centred
  • The star's radius is approximately one-quarter of the hoist height
  • Ratio 2:3

A light blue field with a white five-pointed star (the Star of Unity) centred. The light blue was chosen to match the UN flag colour, in gratitude for UN support of independence. The white star represents unity and equality of the Somali people. Somalia adopted this flag in 1960 upon independence from Italy and Britain.
