A red field with a golden hammer and sickle beneath a gold-bordered red star in the upper hoist corner. Adopted on 12 November 1923, the flag symbolised the unity of industrial workers (hammer) and peasant farmers (sickle) under communist leadership (the star).
The hammer and sickle was originally designed by artist Yevgeny Kamzolkin as a logo for a May Day parade in 1918. The hammer represents industrial workers; the sickle represents farmers. The Soviet flag inspired communist flags worldwide and was iconic for an entire political ideology.
