The Russian Empire's official flag (1858–1917) was a black-yellow-white tricolour. The more familiar white-blue-red merchant flag was also widely used. Used as the national flag of the Russian Empire from 1858 to 1896, then replaced by the white-blue-red tricolour.
The Imperial Russian flag represented the Russian Empire until the 1917 revolution. The white-blue-red colours became the basis for modern Russian flag. Established by Peter the Great.
