Rwanda's flag comprises three horizontal bands of sky blue (double width), yellow, and green, with a 24-ray golden sun in the upper fly corner of the blue band. Adopted on 25 October 2001, it replaced the earlier red-yellow-green tricolour that had flown since 1962. The new design was created by artist and poet Alphonse Kirimobenecyo to mark a deliberate break with Rwanda's recent past.
Red was consciously omitted because of its association with the blood of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Blue stands for happiness and peace, yellow for economic development and mineral wealth, and green for prosperity, work, and the country's natural resources. The 24-ray sun represents enlightenment, transparency, and unity in the fight against ignorance and division.
