Flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis

The flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis features a broad black diagonal band, bordered on each side by a thin yellow stripe and bearing two white five-pointed stars, dividing the field into a green lower-hoist triangle and a red upper-fly triangle. It was chosen from over two hundred entries in a national design competition, the winning submission being by Edrice Lewis, a Kittitian secondary-school student, and was raised on 19 September 1983 when the federation became independent from the United Kingdom.

Green honours the fertile land of the islands, yellow celebrates year-round sunshine, red recalls the struggle against slavery and colonial rule, and black stands for African heritage. The two white stars represent the twin islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis, together expressing hope and liberty.
