Flag of Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste's flag was adopted on 20 May 2002 when the country restored independence following UN transitional administration. The design revives the flag first raised in 1975 at the short-lived unilateral declaration of independence from Portugal, before Indonesian occupation began later that year.

The red field represents the long struggle for national liberation. A yellow isosceles triangle extends from the hoist across half the width, standing for the traces of colonialism in the country's history. Overlapping it is a smaller black triangle representing the obscurantism that the new nation must overcome, and on the black triangle sits a white five-pointed star symbolising the light that guides the people. Timor-Leste is also widely known as East Timor.
