The flag of Trinidad and Tobago presents a red field crossed by a bold black diagonal band, bordered on each side by a thin white stripe, running from the upper hoist to the lower fly. It was designed by the renowned Trinidadian painter Carlisle Chang as part of a committee convened for independence and first raised on 31 August 1962, the day the country gained independence from the United Kingdom.
The three colours stand for the three elements of life: red for the fire of the sun, the warmth of the people, and the vitality of the land; white for the sea around the islands, the purity of their aspirations, and equality among citizens; and black for the dedication, unity, and shared wealth of the nation. The diagonal represents the dynamic movement of a young republic.
