Flag of Ukraine

Ukraine's flag consists of two equal horizontal stripes of blue above yellow, adopted on 28 August 1992. The colours originate from medieval heraldic traditions, with blue and yellow banners documented in Ukrainian principalities from the 13th-14th centuries.

Blue represents the vast skies and symbolizes peace and divine power. Yellow represents the grain growing in extensive wheatfields and symbolizes prosperity. During Soviet times, possession of a Ukrainian flag was a criminal offence. The flag was first ceremonially raised in modern times on 24 July 1990 at Kyiv City Council, symbolizing the nation's drive toward independence.
