Flag of Uganda

Uganda's flag features six equal horizontal bands of black, yellow, red, black, yellow, and red, with a white disc centred on the flag bearing a grey crowned crane, the national bird. Adopted on 9 October 1962 at independence from the United Kingdom, the flag was designed by Grace Ibingira of the Uganda People's Congress, which had just won the elections leading to self-rule.

The colour scheme doubles the Pan-African palette: black for the people of Africa, yellow for the African sun, and red for the brotherhood that binds Africans together. At the centre, the grey crowned crane has been a Ugandan emblem since British colonial times. The bird faces the hoist, a stance often interpreted as a willingness to move forward, and it raises one leg, signalling that the nation is always advancing.
