Flag of Tuvalu

Flag of Tuvalu

Description

  • Light blue ensign with the Union Jack in the upper hoist canton and nine yellow five-pointed stars arranged in the fly area in a stylised map of the atolls
  • Adopted on 1 October 1978 at independence and briefly replaced in 1995-1997 before being restored

Trivia

  • The nine stars form a stylised map of Tuvalu's nine islands, geographically placed east on the flag to match the actual archipelago
  • Between 1995 and 1997 a modified flag without the Union Jack was briefly in use before the original was restored
  • Tuvalu's name literally means 'eight standing together' because only eight of the nine atolls were historically inhabited

Flag of Tuvalu

Tuvalu first adopted its flag on 1 October 1978, the day the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. The design is a light blue ensign with the Union Jack in the upper hoist canton and nine yellow five-pointed stars arranged across the fly as a stylised map of the nation's nine atolls.

The light blue field represents the surrounding Pacific Ocean, and each star marks the approximate position of one of the islands, with east oriented towards the fly to match the real archipelago. Between 1995 and 1997 a redesigned flag without the Union Jack was briefly adopted, but the original was restored on 11 April 1997 after a change of government. The country's name means "eight standing together," after the eight historically inhabited atolls.
