Turkmenistan's flag was adopted on 19 February 1992 after independence from the Soviet Union and amended in 2001. It is often called the world's most complex national flag because of the intricate carpet medallions at its hoist. The design places a vertical red stripe with five traditional carpet guls near the hoist of a green field, with a white crescent and five white stars above.
Green represents Islam and the country's oases, while red honours Turkmen carpet-weaving traditions. The five guls stand for the major tribes — Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chovdur, and Ersary — and the five stars for the country's provinces. Two crossed olive branches were added beneath the guls in 2001 to reflect Turkmenistan's UN-recognised status of permanent neutrality, adopted in 1995.
