The flag of Venezuela is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, blue, and red, with an arc of eight white five-pointed stars on the central blue band. The colours descend from the banner Francisco de Miranda designed in 1806 and share their order with Colombia and Ecuador, the other successor states of Gran Colombia. The yellow represents the wealth of the land, the blue the Caribbean Sea, and the red the blood of those who fought for independence from Spain.
The current state flag was adopted on 12 March 2006, when President Hugo Chavez added an eighth star to honour Simon Bolivar's 1817 decree naming Guayana among the provinces represented. The coat of arms appears in the canton on the state version used by government authorities.
