Vietnam's flag features a gold star on a red background, adopted on 5 September 1945 when Ho Chi Minh declared independence. Red symbolizes revolution and bloodshed for independence. The gold star's five points represent intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and soldiers — the five main classes of Vietnamese society.
The design was first used during a communist uprising in 1940 and became official with the Democratic Republic's declaration. Following the Vietnam War's conclusion in 1975, the red flag with gold star was adopted as the flag of unified Vietnam in 1976.
