Flag of Afghanistan

The current flag of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is a plain white field bearing the Shahada in black Arabic script, adopted on 15 August 2021 upon the Taliban's return to power. It is one of the simplest national flags ever used. The previous flag of the Islamic Republic (2004--2021) was a vertical tricolour of black, red, and green with a national emblem at its centre.

Afghanistan has had more flag changes than almost any other country -- over 20 designs since 1901. In the former tricolour, black represented the dark past of foreign occupation, red symbolised the blood shed for independence, and green stood for Islam, hope, and prosperity.
