Brunei's flag has a yellow field crossed by two diagonal stripes of white and black, with the red national emblem centred on top. The base design, adopted in 1906, initially consisted only of the yellow field and the two diagonal stripes, which represent the sultanate's two chief ministers (the wazirs).
The red emblem was added when Brunei became a self-governing state on 29 September 1959. It displays a parasol and crescent for the monarchy and Islam, wings and upturned hands evoking protection and the welfare of the people, and a scroll bearing the Arabic motto "Always in service with God's guidance" above the country's name, Brunei Darussalam. Yellow remains the royal colour of the sultanate.
