Flag of Bulgaria
The flag of Bulgaria is a horizontal tricolour of white, green, and red in equal bands. It was first adopted in 1879 after the newly independent principality drew from pan-Slavic inspiration, replacing the white-green-red of the 1878 Treaty of San Stefano era with its distinctive green band — reportedly chosen to distinguish the flag from that of Russia, its liberator from Ottoman rule.
The current design was confirmed on 27 November 1991 by the post-communist constitution, which removed the state emblem that had been added in 1947. White represents peace and freedom, green stands for Bulgaria's fertile farmland and agricultural wealth, and red symbolises the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for independence. Desecrating the flag is prohibited by law.
