Flag of Cameroon
Cameroon's flag is a vertical tricolour of green, red and yellow charged with a yellow five-pointed star on the central red band. Green evokes the forests of the south and hope, red stands for unity, and yellow represents the sun and the savannas of the north. The central star is called the Star of Unity.
Cameroon was the first sub-Saharan African country to adopt the Pan-African palette, in October 1957. After French Cameroun gained independence in 1960 and merged with the southern British Cameroons in 1961, the flag carried two yellow stars, one for each former territory. When the federal republic became a unitary state in 1975, the two stars were replaced by the single central star used today.
