Flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a sky-blue field crossed diagonally from the lower hoist to the upper fly by a yellow stripe bordered with red, and charged with a large yellow five-pointed star in the canton. Blue represents peace, red the blood of the country's martyrs, yellow the national wealth, and the star a radiant future.

Adopted on 20 February 2006 with the new constitution, the design is a lighter-blue revival of the independence-era flag used from 1963 to 1971. It replaced the darker-blue version flown under Laurent Kabila from 1997. The Mobutu-era Zaire flag of 1971-1997, green with an arm clutching a torch, was abandoned when the country resumed its pre-Zaire name.
